He holds two M.S., a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering/mechanics, an MBA and two honorary and two semi-honorary doctorates. Yuwen Zhang is a James C. Dowell Professor of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at University of Missouri in the USA. His research interests are in the areas of thermal-fluids science and engineering, including multiscale and multiphase heat and mass transfer, ultrafast and ultraintense laser-mater interaction, and sustainable and renewable energy. He has published five books, over 285 journal articles, and more than 160 conference papers/presentations. He is a recipient of the Young Investigator Award from the US Office of Naval Research (2002), and the Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity from the University of Missouri (2010). He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Esmaiel Jabbari is Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at University of South Carolina. He is internationally known for his work on synthesis and processing of biomimetic bioinspired materials for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. His research interests include bioinspired materials, skeletal tissue engineering, stem cell encapsulation and delivery, self-assembled nanogels for growth factor delivery, drug targeting to cancer stem cells, and engineering the microenvironment of cancer cells. He has published extensively in the areas of biomaterials, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. He has edited four books, published two encyclopedia entry, 20 book chapters, over 110 refereed journal papers, over 100 refereed conference proceedings, presented over 60 invited seminars, and >200 presentations at national and International conferences. He received his PhD in Biomaterials from Purdue under the supervision of Professor Nicholas A. Peppas and his Masters degrees, in chemical engineering and chemistry, and his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech. He was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering AIMBE in 2013. He received the Berton Rahn research prize award in Orthopedic Research from the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen AO Foundation in 2012. In 2008 he received the Stephen B. Milam Research Award from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation for contribution to auto-inductive biomaterials for repair of maxillofacial and cranial tissues. He serves as Academic Editor of PLOS ONE. He also serves as North America Editor of the Journal of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering and serves on the Editorial Board of International Journal of Biomaterials and International Journal of Biomedical Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Graduated cum laude in Civil Engineering – Structural Section at the University of Rome “La Sapienzaâ€, in 1991. In 1996 she received his PhD in Structural Engineering at the University of Florence. From February 2001 to September 2015 she was a researcher in Structural Engineering at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Florence. Since October 2015 she is Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the same Department, where she is currently teaching Structural Engineering – Section II, and Earthquake Engineering. The main research fields concern various topics within earthquake engineering, structural dynamics, finite element modelling, and structural assessment, testing and rehabilitation. She is author of about 150 scientific papers, 30 of which printed in Scopus/ISI Web of Scienceinternational journals. Two among these papers were jointly awarded the 2001 edition of the “Munro Prizeâ€, for the best paper published every year in Engineering Structures journal. Another paper was awarded the 2002 “IABSE Outstanding Paper Awardâ€, for the best paper published every year in Structural Engineering International journal. A fourth paper received the Key Scientific Article Certificate for Excellence in Engineering from Advances in Engineering international scientific organization. She was and is committed as reviewer for more than 10 Scopus/ISI Web of Science-indexed international journals. She was member of Research Units participating to international research Projects financed by the European Commission within the Fifth Framework Program, as well as in national Projects financed the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. Dr. Gordon Huang is the University of Regina Tier Canada Research Chair in Energy and Environment. He is an international leader in the field of environmental systems studies. He and his research team are using inexact optimization approaches to tackle many complexities of energy and environmental management. In particular, they are examining environmental management under uncertainty, and energy systems planning under changing climatic conditions. Huang’s technologies have already been used in multiple sectors, and in many regions and jurisdictions, as the scientific bases for formulating policies that have enormous socioeconomic implications. The resulting findings revealed various complexities in energy and environmental systems and obstacles that hinder sustainable energy development. Huang’s research will help strengthen Canada's ability to be an international leader in managing energy and environmental concerns in the future.

Prof. George Papadakis was born in Chania, Crete, Greece. He has obtained his Diploma on Agricultural Engineering from the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) in 1983. He then continued his studies as PhD candidate at AUA in 1984 and he received his doctoral degree (PhD) on agricultural engineering in 1989. In the following two years (1991-1992) he worked as researcher at the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources in Athens, Greece. Then, from 1993 to 1996, he continued his work as researcher at the Agricultural University of Athens mainly involved in renewable energy projects. In September 1996 he was appointed Assistant Professor (tenured) at the Dept of Natural Resources and Agricultural Engineering of AUA. Since 2009 he is Full Professor on “Renewable Energy Technologies†at AUA.

Prof.dr.ir. Gustaaf Schoukens was professor of polymer technology at the Ghent University (Belgium), faculty of Engineering, retired since October 1, 2014. He received his degree in Chemical Engineering from the K.U. Leuven (Belgium) in 1971 where he also obtained his Ph.D. in 1978. The subject of his Ph.D. research was “Non-linear viscoelastic behaviour of dispersionsâ€. He worked as senior researcher from 1978 till 2004 in the private industry (Solvay; Central Research Laboratory) in the field of polymerization and polymer processing. In 1994 he obtained the part-time position of lecturer at the Ghent University, teaching “polymer processingâ€. In 2004 he obtained the fulltime position of professor at the Ghent University teaching all courses concerning polymer technology, including processing and polymerization processes. He is also involved in the courses concerning “environment and sustainable development†in general and teaching the course of “rational use of materials†in particular. Polymer technology in general and polymer processing, including synthetic and biopolymers, in particular are the main leads in his research program and of its publications. The main research topics are now the development of artificial turf for sport applications and the development of biopolymers based on chitin or chitosan with biomedical properties. A more recent research is the study of nanostructures, especially nanoparticles obtained by reaction engineering. These nanoparticles are already used in large quantities for the coating of paper and paperboards. I am an expert in the production of monofilaments for artificial sport applications and founded ERCAT (European Research Centre for Artificial Turf).

Pierluigi Siano received the M.Sc. degree in electronic engineering and the Ph.D. degree in information and electrical engineering from the University of Salerno, Salerno, Italy, in 2001 and 2006, respectively. He is an Associate Professor with accreditation for Full Professor of Electrical Energy Engineering with the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Salerno. His research activities are centered on demand response, on the integration of distributed energy resources in smart grids and on planning and management of power systems. He has co-authored more than 330 papers including more than 170 international journal papers. He is Chair of the Technical Committee on Smart Grids and a member of the Technical Committee on Renewable Energy Systems of the IEEE IES. Jaroslaw Krzywanski is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science at Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa, Poland. He received the M.Sc. degree from Czestochowa University of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Sciences, Institute of Thermal Machinery, Poland and a Ph.D. degree from Silesian University of Technology, Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering, Poland. Last two years he obtained a D.Sc. degree (Doctor Habilitatus). He has published more than 100 refereed works, including papers, a monograph, conference proceedings and serves as an editorial board member of several international journals. He has participated in the scientific committee of several conferences and serves as a reviewer in a wide range of international journals. He is interested in modeling of energy devices and processes, including solid fuels combustion, gas emissions and hydrogen production from biomass combustion and gasification. He uses both programmed and AI methods to predict pollutants emissions from biomass co-combustion in large-scale circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers, chemical looping combustion (CLC) of biomass in a pilot-scale fluidized bed (FB) systems as well as the hydrogen concentration in syngas during the H2 production via CaO sorption enhanced anaerobic gasification of sawdust in FB units.
